The weekend's TV tips: Taboo, Apple Tree Yard, Let It Shine...
What to watch and review this weekend, January 21 and 22.
Let It Shine (BBC1, 7pm) Week three of Gary Barlow’s feeble talent search and interest is already plummeting. Gary’s looking for five wannabes to star in his uneagerly awaited stage musical about a boy band that isn’t Take That. No one else cares.
The Voice (ITV, 8pm) Another 90 minute dollop of the deeply average pub-singing contest that cost ITV £55million and shows no signs of ever finding a star. Viewing figures are dropping faster than dreary judge Gavin Rossdale’s approval ratings. All in all, money well spent. Still, it could be worse. It could be Let It Shine.
Taboo (BBC1, 9.15pm) The third gripping instalment of the steamy period drama starring Tom Hardy and Jonathan Pryce. Tonight, Hardy’s mysterious character James Delaney forms an alliance with the even more mysterious Dr Dumbarton.
SUNDAY
Dance Dance Dance (ITV, 6.30pm) Host Alesha Dixon presents another dance-off as minor celebrities attempt to recreate routines made famous by Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Fred Astaire. Is this derivative dross any good? No no no.
Apple Tree Yard (BBC1, 9pm) When scientist Yvonne (Emily Watson) meets enigmatic civil servant Mark (Ben Chaplain) their passion instantly explodes. Irresistibly attracted to each other, they embark on a series of dangerous liaisons in very public places. Loads of al fresco sex! But our horny heroes are both married and that spells disaster. There may be serious trouble ahead.
