What to watch and review on Monday, August 22.
Ripper Street (BBC2, 9pm) Series four of the Victorian crime drama that was axed by the BBC and then saved by Amazon, on which it has become a big international hit. In the first episode newly promoted Inspector Drake (Jerome Flynn) is dealing with racist hate crimes a century before the hate crime laws came into existence. Go figure. Meanwhile, Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) is bored with his seaside retirement. Will he be tempted back to Whitechapel to save an innocent man from the gallows? Take a wild guess.
500 Questions (ITV, 9pm) A brand new prime time game show that doesn’t seem to be much more than a daytime game show they’ve stuck on a bit later. TV gastro-guy Giles Coren hosts while the contestants bank cash for each correct answer. But if they get three consecutive questions wrong they’re eliminated. No hints, no multiple choices, no frills. Er… that’s it.
Celebrity Big Brother (Channel 5, 9pm) The final week of the lowest rent series in TV history. And – woohoo – Bear’s the favourite to win. Hope Roofer Boy drops a few more eggs and spills the coffee yet again. That never gets old. Always hilarious.
