First dates Becky and Lewis

Over to Channel 4’s famous First Dates restaurant where they served up exactly the kind of excruciating mismatch that makes this show such a tasty TV treat.

The perfect romantic storm as burlesque dancer Becky dismissed smitten Lewis as the man of her nightmares.

While she retired to the loos to phone a friend, he waxed lyrical to the waitress: “It’s going really well. She’s really sweet and I like her. I don’t know how she feels about me.”

Cut to the ladies’… and take it away Becks: “I feel like I’m maybe out for dinner with my brother. I don’t fancy him at all!” There you go, Lewis. That’s how she feels about you.

Unaware that she found him about as sexually attractive as a dead rat, the poor guy continued to labour under the delusion he was on to a winner.

Although he’s of those people who are naturally unfunny, Lewis wants to be a stand-up comedian. But for the time being he does admin for the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

“Now that is boring,” said Becky. Failing to get the hint, Lewis earnestly pressed on with a joke-free monologue about his less-than-thrilling life.

And then it was off to the judgement room for the big decision on whether these two lonely hearts would see each other again. Take a wild guess.

Lewis: “I thought she was very pretty. Very hot.” Turning to Becky: “Do you want to go first?”

She did: “I don’t think there’s anything romantic between us. I need someone a bit more mature. You know, manly.”

Still not quite realising it was all over bar the two cabs home, Lewis persevered: “It would have been nice to go on a second date and what have you.” What?

And with that, the odd couple who were never meant to be went their very separate ways. Just what the love doctor ordered. A compellingly awkward misunderstanding. Excellent.

But there are more than just disasters on the menu. When beautiful Newcastle single mum Sonia hit it off with Gateshead scientist Ashley in the sweetest way it sent your spirits soaring.

Ditto choirmaster Jay and investment banker Robbie whose fun-packed bonding session was a joy to behold.

Just when you’re feeling hard as nails for laughing at Lewis, you find yourself welling up because thrilled Ruth and Uma clearly believed that they might have finally found the soulmate they’ve both been longing for.

The new series follows hot on the heels of the last one and they’re coming thick and fast. Let’s hope it doesn’t get ruined by over exposure. Like Come Dine With Me.

But it’s a fantastic format. And with the fabulously French maître d' Fred Sirieix and his likeable staff at the helm, this charming programme is still delivering the goods.

As they say in reality TV, it takes you on a journey. An emotional roller coaster ride. All aboard… plenty of room on top. But not for Lewis.

I love this show so much. That Becky though, seriously. She says she's always the one that men date before they find 'the one', and then for this week's preview date involving her, she says she's currently going through a divorce! Well you clearly have been 'the one' temporarily then, love!
